In a hard fought match, the JV Volleyball team lost in three sets to a strong Carolina Mustangs team. The first match of the season was a tough road game against an Independent school that draws players from several surrounding counties. The Lady Patriots are a very young team with 9 freshmen on the roster and it was clear in the first set that the team is still developing the communication and trust essential for top volleyball programs.
The Patriots dropped the first set as they struggled with serving and serve/receive. The second set began much as the first had ended but the Lady Patriots put it all together as the set progressed. Sophomore setter Mackenzie Long served for seven straight points and captains Callie Keehbler and Reese Taylor kept morale high and focused. The result was a 25-23 second set win. The third and decisive set was back and forth as the Patriots found a better rhythm on both offense and defense. The Mustangs also picked up their pace of play and forged to a lead, holding it until the end.
The early season loss to a quality opponent provided a good measure of where the team is and areas that need attention. A non-conference loss at this point in the season should provide many lessons and help the team be stronger as a result.
